Design and construction of a new highways retaining wall

SWIFT RAIL SERVICES were contracted by Kent County Council to undertake the Principal Designer Role through the construction of Tunstall retaining wall. Swift Rail Services were awarded the construction contract and together with SWIFT RAIL SERVICES delivered the design and the construction works 2 weeks ahead of schedule saving the client valuable time, cost and road closures.

The project consisted of the demolition of the existing kerb line at Tunstall Road and the installation of a new brick retaining wall and handrail to the footpath / road. A electrical sub-station was located adjacent to the works site and underground HV cables were a significant risk during the works. To mitigate the risks SWIFT RAIL SERVICES carried our detailed buried services searches, CAT and Genny scanning and trial holes to trace and located all buried services within the vicinity of the works.

SWIFT RAIL SERVICES reviewed design documents, prepared and issued the Designer Risk Assessment and Pre-construction Information also notifying the Project (F10) on behalf of the Client. Careful redesign was required to the retaining walls foundation by SWIFT RAIL Construction Consultanst structural and civil engineers to overcome shallow services, SWIFT RAIL SERVICES undertook weekly site visits to ensure that Health, Safety, Welfare and Quality was to the highest of levels and reported back to Kent County Council any issues identified on site.

On completion and handover of the project SWIFT RAIL SERVICES worked closely with Kent County Council and Swift Rail Services to prepare and issue a detailed and comprehensive Health and Safety File. The works were a great success with local residents praising the works as being swift and with no disruption.
