The GRIP 5 - 8 Project Management and Delivery of Snodland Station

SWIFT RAIL SERVICES were appointed from feasibility to completion stages of Snodland Station Referbishment to undertake the design and project management of the refurbishment of Snodland station.

This £1.1 million refurbishment of Snodland Station has created a 'transport interchange', an extended car park and seen the ticket office re-open for the first time since 1986. The upgrade of the listed building and forecourt will cater for the growing number of passengers using the station. Since the introduction of high speed services from Maidstone via Snodland five years ago, passenger numbers have increased by around 30%.

Outside the design has created better access for buses, cyclists and pedestrians, extending the car park to 44 spaces from 7 and from 1 accessible space to 2 accessible parking spaces.  A new CCTV system and security lighting system have been installed and will improve security at the station. The project will also see passengers benefit from more information screens giving real-time details on train services, seating in the booking hall, step-free access to the ticket office and an accessible toilet.

The Listed building has been sympathetically refurbished. Restoration works have included the following:

  • Modern blockwork internal walls have been removed and station been opened to create a spacious booking hall and waiting room
  • Brick work has been cleaned and the tuck pointing reinstated.
  • Coving have been repaired where present and new coving to match existing installed to public areas
  • Window sashes have been replaced to match original fan light design
  • New skirting’s have been installed to match original pattern found during research and surveys
  • A reclaimed fireplace has been sourced for the building. This was restored and installed with encaustic tiles within.
  • A historical plan of the building has been printed and framed and now sits above the fireplace.

In addition to the above a modern Ticket office has been installed. This is in contrast to the historical features of the building and is easily read as a modern addition to the building. Other modern features are the Accessible toilet

The project was jointly funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) with £600,000 from its National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP), Kent County Council with £485,000 from its Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and the Railway Heritage Trust £32,000.

Other partners include Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Kent Community Rail Partnership, Snodland Town Council and Network Rail.

SWIFT RAIL Construction Consultanst sucessfuly project managed the scheme to and outstanding level bringing the project in on time and under the clients budget. Project Management services provided to the cleint included:

  • A single point of contact throughout the projects delivery
  • Chairing and minting fortnightly progress meetings
  • Weekly informal client updates
  • Commercial management of the contract, (compensation events, monthly contractors application review, issuing payment certificates and final account)
  • Weekly site inspections with H&S inspections / reports and design installation inspections
  • Programme management
  • Resource management
  • Problem solving
  • Third-party and stakeholder management and co-ordination
